Some Basic Tips for Effective Search Engine Optimization

Posted in SEO by Ricardo d Argence @ May 31, 2009

On page optimization refers to search engine optimization techniques used directly in the construction of web pages. However, it is important to remember that on page optimization is about more than simply search engine optimization, it should be about optimizing the page for human readers. When you do this, you generally make the search engines happy as well. It is important to provide visitors to your website with valuable content that makes them want to come back to your site again and again.

Monitoring your use of keywords is important, as well as making sure your website’s content is indispensable. Stay away from keyword stuffing for it not only makes your website appear to be unintelligent and unprofessional but because search engines have caught on they penalize for the overuse of keywords. The goal is using keywords realistically and prudently. Keywords are often solely used to attract web search traffic.

Despite the fact that customary SEO recognizes an ideal of 2-7% keyword density for page optimization, Google has changed their systems to suggest that a 1-2% density may be more ideal (simpler to read). Create a list of the most commonly utilized search words that relate to the subject and subtopics you are using and put them within the confines of your site. Google’s latent semantic index (LSI) will also reward you for the use of similar phrases.

Do not limit keywords within your page content. It is imperative that one includes the chosen keywords in their title pages.

Search engines identify the content of your pages largely on the words used in your page titles. Without the use of keywords in page titles, you will need to have a lot of external links pointed to that page to encourage website traffic.

When using keywords in the titles of your work, put them close to the beginning of your title and make sure that it is able to be read. To optimize search results, there should always be a title page.

Be sure that every page of your website has a short page title using the most important keywords for the page. Keep in mind that search engines will only display set numbers of characters in each search result. Generally speaking, it is enough to only use a keyword once in a title - to use the keyword two or three times is repetitive.

Meta tags is a term you may read about when reading about “on page optimization” but because it was widely abused by spam, search engines don’t acknowledge them. There are very few SEO professionals who continue to depend on meta tags for web page optimization. If you decide to go ahead, make sure you only use meta keywords and descriptions so that these words and phrases show up on the page and are not going to be considered spam.

Links from your site to other related pages will also enhance the popularity of your search engine. Consequently, it is imperative that the links provided are real and sent to sites with similar content that adds value to the visitors.

Page optimization is not that hard to do and it will largely benefit the success you will have with the search engines if you offer to your visitors excellent and relevant content.

Branding is often referred to as the “Goodwill Portion” of your business. It is an intangible that can be of greater value than your liquid assets. Being “brand aware” involves continuity in your physical and today more importantly your online presence. Social networking sites Twitter and facebook allow organizations to determine what people are saying, thinking and doing about their brands. What does differentiate these two from each other as branding tools is a difference of depth of information and rapid distribution.

There are several great business and celebrity examples of being proactive via social networking with their online brand. Whole Foods Markets can be found on both facebook and Twitter. They actively communicate with buyers providing both product information and consumer alerts. Facebook offers them a chance to provide forum based knowledge sharing, whereas Twitter has become a rapid alert venue for product updates and recalls.

Why Websites Need More Attention than Pets

Close to 40% of the small business websites on the Internet are not generating the desired results. In many cases, their owners have no idea why. Is your site one of the forty percent? You’ll know in just a few minutes if you answer just five questions.

1. Does your website’s design portray your business in the proper light? Think of 5 words or phrases you would like to have people use when describing your business and ask yourself if your site brings them to mind. If not, you have work to do.

2. Is the content of your website as good as it can be? You can only answer affirmatively if it is written with your target audience in mind, if there is not too much or too little verbiage, if the benefits of your product are well portrayed, and if there is a persuasive call to action. Otherwise, your site needs improvement.

3. Does your website include a frequently asked questions page? Remember that most readers skim, and are lazy about reading to gather new information. A FAQ page gives you another way to convey to them the information you feel is most important. As such, it can be a great sales tool.

4. Does your site include an “about us” page? Does it portray you and/or your business as honest, customer-oriented, and professional? My websites on online degree programs outline my professional experience in higher education and list both my email address and telephone number.

5. Is your contact information on your site? Is it easy to find? Your website visitors should at least be able to contact you via email, for two reasons. First, many will not buy from you if they have no way to contact you after the sale. Second, it is to your advantage to be available to answer the questions of potential customers. An order form is not a substitute for a contact form, email address, or telephone number. I think that commercial websites should have prominent links to a contact form on every page.

Your website will get you the best results if you view it as a work-in-progress, not a finished product. Review and evaluate it regularly. Seek the opinions of others. And, don’t be afraid to make changes.
